In this section, learn more about the anatomy of the bones of the neck. The horns of the hyoid bone converge centrally to form the body of the hyoid. Most of these attach to the bone’s two greater horns with the exception of the stylohyoid ligament which attaches to the lesser horns. Posterior lymph nodes are located along the back of the neck. There are two general categories of cervical lymph nodes: anterior and posterior. The hyoid bone is a U-shaped bone found anteriorly in the neck around the level of C3. Cervical lymph nodes are located in the neck region. These permit rotation and flexion at the head. There are 8 cervical spinal nerves associated with the cervical vertebrae.Ĭ1 ( atlas) and C2 ( axis) are specialised atypical vertebrae which, together with the occiput, form the atlanto-axial and atlanto-occipital joints. ![]() The vertebrae are supported by the same ligaments found throughout the spine as well as the nuchal ligament, a thickened continuation of the supraspinous ligament. Their arches articulate through synovial joints between articular facets. The bodies of the typical cervical vertebrae articulate via symphyses, separated by fibrocartilaginous intervertebral discs. It is also notable because the vertebral arteries do not pass through its transverse foramina but rather run past its transverse processes. C7 is known as vertebra prominens due to its especially long, monofid spinous process. The occipital cervical nodes are located. Through their large, triangular vertebral foramina runs the cervical enlargement of the spinal cord while the vertebral arteries and veins run through the transverse foramina bilaterally. The post auricular, or mastoid, nodes are located behind the ears and drain the back of the neck, part of the external ear, and part of the ear canal. C3 to C6 are the typical cervical vertebrae characterised by the presence of transverse foramina and, in many people, by their bifid spinous processes. The cervical spine is comprised of the 7 uppermost vertebrae of the vertebral column. The cervical spine and the hyoid bone constitute the bones of the neck.
